Strategic leaps needed: reducing CO2 in cement production

Cement plays one of the most fundamental roles in construction, but it is also among the key drivers of climate change, responsible for 6-9% of global CO2 emissions.

Conventional technical progress, such as thermal efficiency, fuel switching and a reduction in the clinker-to-cement ratio will not suffice. The key technology innovation required is carbon capture and storage (CCS).

A reduction in carbon emissions will also drive change throughout the value chain in the production of concrete and cement.

Our report examines how players in the cement and concrete value chain need to assess whether the adoption of new business models that are less volume-based and more value-based is an attractive strategic direction.
